PSN Getting Two-Factor Authentication In Latest Update

When it comes to security Sony’s Playstation Network (PSN) hasn’t got the greatest history, with the network being hacked in 2011 ending with a legal battle that finally ended last month with free games offered to those affected. In a move to help protect users accounts, Sony is looking to implement two-factor authentication when you are attempting to access your PSN account.

Two-factor authentication is the process where you use a second device or account to log in and verify you are who you say you are. As a result, you could find yourself using an app on your phone, or copying a code from your email account alongside your normal username and password combination to get access to your account.

A Sony representative spoke with GameSpot and confirmed that “In order to further safeguard our users and their accounts, we are preparing to offer a two-step verification feature”, something made redundant by the update already showing messages relating to the feature in the latest update.

While “announced” and included in help messages on the system, there is no official date on when the feature will come to PSN users, instead people will have to wait while the network catches up with the likes of Battle.net, Steam and Xbox Live with its use of two-factor authentication.
