Psychonauts was, for many, one of the best puzzle platformers ever released. Combining fantastic visuals with brilliant design, it was an instant classic on release. Despite excellent reviews upon release, however, the game was a catastrophic failure.
The reason for the failure is a little complicated, but put simply it was just a great game released at completely the wrong time. It wasn’t even particularly unique in this regard. Grim Fandango, released at a similar time, was also a critical success but commercial flop.
Despite the poor sales, the game had garnered itself a very strong fan base over the years. Fortunately, people did come to recognize it for the classic it really was. When Tim Schafer, gaming development God, announced a Kickstarter for a sequel, it raised over a $1m within its first 12 hours. The sequel was on!
With a release originally expected for 2018, a report via Polygon suggests that 2018 is sadly not going to happen. Psychonauts 2 has been delayed until at least 2019.
The length of the delay is definitely concerning. Particularly since only a short while ago were teased with some in-game footage.
While Double Fine isn’t an inexperienced studio, they don’t have the funds of some of the bigger companies. Therefore, any delays would not have been an easy decision. Delays, however, particularly for Kickstarter funded projects are sometimes ok, but overall are rarely a good thing.
The delay therefore generally would indicate 1 of 2 things. Either the project has hit a major problem or they simply completely underestimated the scale. Despite this, the official reason is for ‘polishing and quality’ purposes.
Psychonauts 2 will be fantastic. If you don’t believe me, just check out Tim Schafer’s pedigree. Unfortunately, however, we will still be anticipating it by next Christmas too.
