PUBG Disables Steam Family Sharing to Stop Cheaters

PUBG’s Never Ending War with Cheaters

As the most popular video game online, it is understandable that PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds has its fair share of cheaters. Ever since it left Steam Early Access, the game’s developers have been working on boosting performance and enforcing anti-cheat measures. According to the company, they ban approximately 20,000 users daily. However, the ban apparently is not enough of a deterrent. That is because the cheaters just keep on coming. Which is why PUBG Corp is implementing a new anti-cheat solution to tackle the issue.

“This solution will complement the systems that have been developed and implemented already,” according to Dohyung Lee. Lee is the head of service management and anti-cheat at PUBG Corp. “Its main focus for now is blocking unauthorized programs but it will be further developed to broaden the scope of its abilities,” he writes on a recent Steam community post.

Steam Family Sharing: A Casualty of War

In order to implement the new anti-cheat measure however, PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds will have to disable Steam family sharing. Lee writes that they chose to deactivate this feature due to a number of vulnerabilities. He then pleads for some understanding that they are introducing this measure to fight abuse and ensure a fair environment.

When is this Update Arriving?

The update is arriving sometime in the second week of February. So far, over 1.5 million cheaters have been removed. The most of which was 100,000 users on a single wave. Once this new security measure is in place, that number could go even higher.
