QNAP Adds Blu-Ray Drive with TVS-882BR NAS Series

A NAS is no longer just a NAS, it’s a lot more and that’s once again proven by one of QNAP‘s devices. The new TVS-882BR series brings Blu-Ray support to the table for two-way backup and playback.

QNAP also partnered with Fengtao Software to provide an all-in-one backup solution with its DVDFab software. DVDFab provides a complete solution for backing up disc-based files to the NAS for more convenient storage while also enabling NAS-based files to be written to discs for disaster recovery purposes.

QNAP TVS-882BR Internal Hardware

There are a lot of model options in this NAS series, starting with the processor. You can get it with either an Intel Core i5-7500 3.4GHz quad-core or an i7-7700 3.6GHz quad-core processor. The i5 model comes with 16GB RAM pre-installed while the i7 model has 32GB. Both models can be upgraded to 64GB DDR4 memory.

Performance wise, you’re able to get up to 443 MB/s at both read and write operations, even with AES-NI encryption. That’s thanks to the CPU’s hardware acceleration abilities.

With or Without Thunderbolt 3

QNAP launches two models of this NAS, the TVS-882BRT3 with Thunderbolt 3 and the TVS-882BR without. Thunderbolt isn’t needed by everyone, so why pay for it if you don’t need it. The Thunderbolt model comes with four ports for multiple connections. The functionality includes Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet (T2E) 10GbE.

The four Thunderbolt 3 ports are achieved by two pre-installed dual-port expansion cards. So, you’re able to upgrade the non-Thunderbolt model to the same features by adding the same type of add-in cards.

With or Without Blu-Ray drive

There are two more options, one that comes with a pre-installed LG WH16NS58D optical disc drive and one that doesn’t. The Blu-ray playing function allows direct playback via HDMI using Linux Station or Virtualization Station. Third-party media player software may be required and it may require separate license purchase.

Other Connection and Expansion Options

There’s no shortage of the normal connection options in the TVS-882BR series. You get four Gigabit Ethernet ports, five USB 3.0 Type-A ports, and three HDMI 1.4b ports with UHD 4K support as well as line-out and microphone ports.

The three PCI-Express slots are a Gen.3 x8 slot and two Gen.3 x4 slots. These expansion slots can be used for 10GbE/40GbE network adapter, SAS storage expansion card, or USB 3.1 10GbE adapters.

The normal drive bays accept 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives and you’ll also be able to boost the performance with two M.2 SATA drives.

Pricing and Availability

QNAP didn’t announce a price, but the new units should be available. So check your local store for their deals on the one of the eight you’d like.
