QNAP Introduces TVS-x73e AMD RX-421BD APU NAS

We see a lot of different processors used for NAS devices, but it isn’t often that we see AMD powered systems. It is weird as they’re great at exactly this task which must be why QNAP now released the TVS-x73e series. The new series consists of a 4-bay, 6-bay, and an 8-bay model which all are built around the AMD RX-421BD Quad-core APU.

“The TVS-x73e NAS series is powered by an AMD quad-core APU with up to 3.4 GHz clock speed and also provides dual PCIe slots that add more value to maximize NAS potential for a wider range of applications, making the TVS-x73e ideal for organizations and professionals who ask for performance and expandability,” said Jason Hsu, Product Manager of QNAP.

QNAP TVS-x73e Series NAS

TVS-x73e is an SMB NAS lineup. It utilizes the energy efficient AMD RX-421BD quad-core APU which has a 2.1 GHz core speed and a turbo up to 3.4 GHz. The systems come with either 4GB or 8GB DDR4 memory installed, but you can upgrade that all the way to 64GB. All of that is housed in an all-metal enclosure.

The new series isn’t just great in basic hardware, it’s also expandable. Besides the normal 3.5-inch drive bays, the NAS’ feature two M.2 SATA 6Gb/s SSD slots for SSD cache acceleration with Qtier auto-tiering. Boost your performance by letting the smart algorithms cache all your hot files. The units also come with two PCIe slots which can be used for 10GbE NICs, QM2 cards, or USB 3.1 cards. With such setups, it can deliver up to 1139 MB/s throughput. With AES-NI hardware-accelerated encryption engine it can still deliver up to 1091 MB/s.

4K Video? No Problem

The TVS-x73e features AMD 3rd Gen GCN architecture with breakthrough GPU performance to support 4K video decoding and stunning 4K UHD display, and the dual HDMI output with a free remote control makes it easy to enjoy the best audiovisual experience.

Unique USB QuickAccess Port

QNAP also added their unique USB QuickAccess port to the TVS-x73e series. With it, you can connect the NAS as a DAS and eliminate the need for network connections that might be used otherwise. Or maybe you need access from a system that isn’t hooked up to the network. Whichever it is, you can do it with these NAS.

Business Ready Features

The TVS-x73e series is business-ready as NAS and iSCSI-SAN unified storage solution. It supports VMware, Citrix, Microsoft Hyper-V and Windows Server 2012 R2 environments. It can also natively host multiple virtual machines with Windows, Linux, UNIX and Android as well as LXC and Docker containers.

Scalable Storage

The TVS-x73e series is scalable by connecting QNAP expansion enclosures (UX-800P, UX-500P or REXP-1000 Pro). You can also expand the storage capacity with VJBOD (Virtual JBOD). It leverages the unused storage capacity of other QNAP NAS for use as virtual disks.
