QNAP vQTS: Run Multiple Virtual QTS Systems

NAS hardware continues to gain in strength which opens up a lot of possibilities. We’ve just seen QNAP launch their Ryzen-powered TS-x77 series and this is where we’ll first see the new feature. The new feature is the ability to run multiple QTS systems virtually on a single NAS. Now that’s epic, especially when we consider that Ryzen has up to 16 threads for us.

Why Should You Waste Your Resources?

There is absolutely no reason to waste our resources. That is a fact whether we’re talking about our money or hardware. An AMD Ryzen 7 1700 has 16 threads at 3GHz which delivers a lot of performance. Far more than ordinary file-services need.

Now, with that in mind: Why purchase multiple NAS devices and set them up in various locations throughout your premises when you don’t have to? Get a single NAS and share it virtually, allowing every department or office to have their own setup as if they had a local NAS. It is easy to see how that can save a lot of trouble.

The Ryzen-powered NAS series, QNAP TS-x77, is available in various sizes and configurations. We have covered the launch a couple of days ago and you can go back to that post for more details, pricing, and availability.

What About Non-Ryzen NAS?

Right now, the vQTS feature is available for the Ryzen NAS only. However, QNAP did phrase the press release with the word “initially”. That means that we’ll see it for Intel quad-cores and similar powerful NAS devices down the road. Such a technology requires a lot of testings as QNAP wants to make sure that it runs perfectly on every device. So, I’m sure they’re busy testing just that.

Availability

vQTS is now available for the TS-x77 NAS series. To make use of it, you will need to install Virtualization Station v3.1.7 first. Then you can start to create your vQTS’.
