QNAP released a new and powerful enterprise-class NAS series called the TES-x85U. The new series includes the 18-bay TES-1885U and the 30-bay TES-3085U. Both models are powered by a high-performance but energy-saving Intel Xeon D processor, and provides the choice of dual OS inside a single rackmount NAS. Users can choose to install the business storage QES operating system or the app-centric QTS operating system based on their needs.
Both these new NAS devices come with a 14nm Intel Xeon D 64-bit SoC processor, but not the same. The TES-1885U features a D-1531 6-core CPU with 2.2GHz clock speed while the TES-3085U features a D-1548 8-core CPU with a 2.0GHz clock speed. Both systems support up to 128GB DDR4 ECC memory and come in various pre-installed RAM options from 16GB to 128GB.
These 12Gb/s SAS-enabled NAS’ also have two built-in 10GbE SFP+ ports to natively support 10GbE network environments and they can further boost system performance with PCIe Gen.3 expansion for additional 10GbE/40GbE adapters and PCIe NVMe SSD. The high-density TES-3085U is especially useful for providing an ultra-fast all-flash storage solution that offers up to 24 drive bays and 6 dedicated SDDs bays for caching.
“With quality hardware delivering high expandability and reliability alongside powerful software manageability, the TES-x85U is highly suited for mission-critical computing tasks and applications,” said David Tsao, Product Manager of QNAP, adding “The extreme flexibility to choose from two operating systems further allows businesses to deploy ideal operating systems on multiple TES-x85U based on their needs and goals in different stages.”
The TES-x85U provides the flexibility of two operating systems, either the FreeBSD-based QES for enterprise-level storage with maximized business continuity, or Linux-based QTS for enjoying application storage with greater functionality. Each has their benefits depending on your needs.
QES features ZFS, RAID-Z for data protection, nearly limitless snapshots, SnapSync, data deduplication, and in-line compression for optimized VDI storage performance, self-healing, and more. With SnapSync, the TES-x85U can be used as an efficient backup system for QNAP Enterprise ZFS NAS to immediately recover all the backed up data locally to take over operations and services with maximized uptime.
When used with QTS, the TES-x85U performs as an all-in-one NAS solution. The Qtier Technology helps to continuously optimize storage efficiency across SSDs and SAS/SATA drives and provide an efficient storage center. It features both comprehensive disaster recovery solution with backup options such as volume and LUN snapshots, RTRR, rsync, and cloud storage backup. Users can create and run virtual machines for extensive applications on the NAS using Virtualization Station, or initiate LXC and Docker containers and perform IoT development with Container Station. And then there are all the rest of the QTS features and function we know well from our reviews.

TES-3085U Key Specifications
The scalable TES-x85U series can connect up to 8 QNAP expansion enclosures (REXP-1620U-RP and REXP-1220U-RP) to flexibly expand its raw capacity. With VJBOD (Virtual JBOD), users can also mount the unused storage capacity from other QNAP NAS units to the TES-x85U and create virtual storage pools and volumes for operating NAS services as if they were using local drives.
The smaller TES-1885U NAS is available now and the bigger TES-3085U will be available in November.
