QNAP Releases Exclusive Virtual JBOD Feature with QTS 4.2.2

QNAP Systems released their new QTS 4.2.2 operating system and that comes with an awesome new and unique feature to expand the storage capacity called Virtual JBOD, or VJBOD for short. The new beta function allows users to expand the capacity of their QNAP NAS by using unused storage resources from other QNAP NAS’ which is a feature that could benefit users with multiple QNAP NAS’ greatly and help achieve optimal capacity utilisation in a cost-effective way.

VJBOD works much in the same way that the normal JBOD does, except that it works across network connections instead of direct connections. It allows users to allocate storage space from another QNAP NAS iSCSI LUN as a Virtual Disk and then create storage pools, take snapshots, clone snapshots, or index multimedia files into the media library on the local NAS. With VJBOD you can use unused storage space from up to 8 remote NAS while at the same time being connected to QNAP expansion enclosures, providing massive amounts of storage on a single NAS. Naturally, this can be used with all network connections, but you’ll get the best performance when coupled with 10GbE or 40GbE network and port trunking.

There is no need to worry about accidental disconnections as it featuring an advanced mechanism for handling disconnections. If the remote NAS experiences a power outage, disconnection, or change in IP address, you will receive warnings via event notifications in QTS. The NAS will also automatically attempt to reconnect and recover the VJBOD storage.

While VJBOD Beta requires the main NAS to run QTS 4.2.2, it can connect to remote NAS’ running 4.2.1 and newer which support iSCSI LUN.
