QNAP TS-251 High-Performance 2-Bay Prosumer NAS Review

Encryption
As mentioned previously in the review, security is an ever-growing concern and encryption is a great step to achieve this. As such I will be including a comparison between this and a normal single drive for a basic comparison and to show if and how it will impact on your performance. I will be testing this with both a full volume encryption as well as with a single encrypted shared folder.
Single Shared Folder Encryption
Full Volume Encryption
Our benchmarks are real-world tests and will always variate a little. We see above that a full volume encryption doesn’t have any real impact on our performance and some of the tests even showed better stats with encryption than without. This can be attributed to normal statistic anomalies and I think it’s fair to say that encryption doesn’t have any real performance impact on this NAS and that is mainly thanks to the choice of CPU.
Encrypting a single shared folder does effect performance quite a bit and we see drops in performance of up to 50%. Thanks to the already great performance of the TS-251, we’re still left with speeds that are totally acceptable.
