QNAP’s TS-x53BU Series NAS Now Available

QNAP has a lot of large rack systems, but also a nice list of affordable systems. The latest family, the TS-x53BU series, falls into that category. It comes with a great base that also features expansion options.

“The TS-x53BU secures data with a complete backup solution while providing high performance and expandability. The PCIe slot satisfies a variety of business demands with functional expansion options including SSD caching or 10GbE connectivity,” said Dan Lin, Product Manager of QNAP.

TS-x53BU Hardware

QNAP’s TS-x53BU series uses the 14nm Intel Celeron J3455 quad-core processor. The J3455 features a 1.5GHz base clock and a burst speed up to 2.3 GHz. The amount of memory depends on the unit you get, there are 4GB and 8GB models. The 4GB models can be upgraded and they all feature dual-channel DDR3L RAM. That combination allows the units to deliver up to 415 MB/s read speed and 416 MB/s write speed with Intel AES-NI 256-bit encryption.

Base hardware is one thing, you also need to connect the NAS. That is done through a quadruple Gigabit Ethernet option that can be expanded with 10GbE through a PCIe slot. There are four USB 3.0 ports and a HDMI 1.4b port too.

Multiple Bay, PSU, and Size Options

The size of the TS-x53BU rackmount NAS series depends on the amount of drive bays you’ll want. There are 1-bay, 8-bay, and 12-bay units in this series, allowing you to pick the right fit for your company. The 4-bay unit is a 1U device while the other two options are 2U devices.

There are multiple options when it comes to the PSU too. There are models with a normal PSU and there are models with a redundant PSU option.

PCIe Upgrade Options

The basic system is solid, but you might want to take it to levels beyond that. For such a scenario, you can use the PCIe slot and add a 10GbE network solution or USB 3.1 Gen.2 10Gbps adapter.

QNAP’s own QM2 add-in card could be a great option here. It combines an M.2 SSD solution with a 10GbE LAN adapter to boost SSD caching performance and to provide 10GbE connectivity.

Ideal for Virtualization Environments and VMs

The TS-x53BU would be an ideal solution for deploying virtualization environments and hosting virtual machines, which greatly helps businesses curb IT server expenses.
