Qualcomm Reportedly Eyes Intel’s PC Chip Design Division

Qualcomm is reportedly exploring the acquisition of parts of Intel’s PC chip design division, aiming to strengthen its entry into the personal computing market. This potential move, highlighted by Reuters, comes at a time when Intel is facing significant financial pressures, and the possibility of divesting assets is under consideration. Qualcomm, best known for its Snapdragon processors in the mobile sector, appears poised to broaden its portfolio to compete more aggressively in the PC space.

Intel’s Struggles Open Door for Qualcomm’s Expansion

Intel, once a dominant force in the PC market, is going through its worst financial period. The company has faced numerous setbacks, including the instability of its 13th and 14th generation CPUs. This has led to rumors that Intel is looking to sell off parts of its chip design business. Qualcomm, which has been making inroads into the Windows PC market with its Snapdragon X Elite line, reportedly views this acquisition as an opportunity to bolster its position in the PC market.

Intel has stated that it remains committed to its PC division, which generated $7.4 billion in revenue in Q2 2024. Qualcomm, however, has yet to formally approach Intel for the deal. As Intel considers other cost-saving measures, such as the possible sale of its FPGA unit, the company’s future strategy remains uncertain.
