Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC Starts Mass Production In May

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 is one of the most successful and desired mobile SoCs (system on chips) currently on the market. Although, that said the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 is becoming a bit aged now as newer technology SoCs from other companies are overtaking it, for example Samsung’s Exynos 5 SoC.

That said a Qualcomm executive has confirmed that the Snapdragon 800 will enter mass production in late May. The Snapdragon 800 is based around the Krait 400 architecture and features four cores with clock speeds as high as 2.3GHz with very low power consumption. On the GPU front the Adreno 330 brings graphics that are capable of 4K playback at 30 FPS. And if all that wasn’t good enough then the Snapdragon 800 series will also have 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 and 4G LTE all built into the chip. A quick charging circuit and voice command capabilities top off the rest of the feature set.

Qualcomm hasn’t disclosed much information about which handset manufacturers have ordered these new SoCs so we will keep watch for news about that. Pricing and availability aren’t yet known but if mass product is beginning in late May then we may see some handsets arrive at market a few months after May – a late August launch could be possible here for Snapdragon 800 based handsets.
