Quantum Break Update to Include Variable Refresh Support

Quantum Break received relatively positive reviews on launch and was the first example of Microsoft’s new cross-platform policy to bring PC and Xbox One players together. Unfortunately, the PC edition was plagued with numerous bugs and horrendous optimisation. Furthermore, many users reported that they couldn’t reach 60 frames-per-second even with a 980 Ti running at a modest 1920×1080. This is surprising given Remedy Entertainment’s PC credentials and I expected a more polished PC version. Not only that, Microsoft’s Universal Windows Store originally released with ridiculous restrictions and games featured a V-Sync lock which couldn’t be disabled. This is disastrous if you own a G-Sync or FreeSync monitor because it prevented variable refresh technology from being used. Thankfully, Microsoft launched a huge update addressing common complaints of the Universal Windows Platform which suggests they are learning from their previous mistakes.

One of the key updates allows you to disable V-Sync and use either G-Sync or FreeSync. Yesterday, Head of PR at Remedy, Thomas Puha clarified that this extra functionality is already being worked on and will be included in update 3.

He also added that the patch should arrive within the next two weeks:

This is fantastic news for Quantum Break fans using a monitor capable of variable refresh. Furthermore, when the performance is fairly poor, technologies like G-Gsync comes into their own and provide a smoother experience.
