RAGE 2 Performance Analysis – AMD and Nvidia Tested

RAGE 2 Performance Analysis Are you eager to dive into RAGE 2? I know I am! I loved the first game, it had its flaws, sure, but it was a stunning looking game that offered a unique spin on the exploration RPG shooter. Now it's back, with bigger and better guns, better graphics, and stunning new environments. It certainly looks impressive, but what does it take to run it? We've seen the recommended requirements, but today, I'll be punching in the a wide range of graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia. Which card will be fastest, can the budget cards hit 60 FPS, can you play it at 4K? These are questions I'm dying to answer, so let's dive in and take a quick look at what the game has to offer! With our previous reviews, we used the “Medium or Normal” preset. However, as GPUs get faster, we’ve now moved that up to “High” profiles for all games, at all resolutions. V-Sync is always disabled in our testing, as are FreeSync and G-Sync technologies or similar. Graphics card power usage set to optimised or balance, and the system power mode set to High Performance within Windows and the available GPU driver software. Identical settings are used for all resolutions unless otherwise stated. The RAGE 2 was using the first outdoor scene in the games opening sequence. It's got a great mixture of lighting effects, explosions, enemies, NPCs, and is quite a large area, making it a fairly balance test. The high profile was used for frame rate testing with V-Sync off, Scaling Off, and Chromatic Abrasion and Motion Blur Off (because I hate them). Furthermore, we also test 1080p resolution only, using the low, medium, high and ultra profiles. 1080p (Full HD), 1440p (2K), and 2160p (4K) Please note that an AMD Radeon VII was not available to us at the time of testing, but we will aim to include those results when possible. Without a doubt, this is an impressively well-optimised game to run. OK, we're backing it up with an i9-9900K (stock clocks) which does help a fair bit, but these dates, any modern quad-core or above should keep a pretty similar pace in any game. GPU performance is the big deal for modern games though. What's amazing is that even the rather weak GTX 1650 still managed 56 FPS. That's very playable for high-settings, and a minor tweak will have that north of 60 FPS easily. While we didn't have them to hand to test, I'd bet that the 1550 series would do similar, as would old AMD cards such as the 280X or the Nvidia GTX 660 Ti if you're on older hardware, albeit on medium settings. Everything else managed 1080p with ease, and even the VEGA 56 broke 100 FPS, which is great for HFR display. 1440P and 144Hz+ Gaming You're easily taken care of here too, with everything from the RX580, which scored 53 FPS to the GTX 1660 Ti which scored 60 FPS giving an entry-level 1440p performance. Those who are gaming at 1440p and 144Hz, however, will want a high-end RTX class card. Only the RTX 2080 Ti did over 100 FPS (128 to be exact). However, the RTX 2080 did 99 FPS, which is certainly up there. Glorious 4K This is where the game got really demanding, even on our fine rig. Only the RTX 2080 Ti scored above 60 FPS with 62 FPS. The RTX 2080 right down to the 1080 Ti were not far off. However, dropping some settings to medium would be more than ideal here. Anything below that is going to look a bit cinematic/console like. That being said, the game still looks amazing at medium settings at 4K, so don't be too shy about dialling things back a bit. Low, Medium, High, Ultra This is one of my favourite tests, it's not about who's faster, AMD or Nvidia. I want to see how well the games graphics profiles scale on each brand of cards. I've chosen a modest card from each brand, and the GTX 1660 Ti goes first. As you can see, our High figures are the same as we got from our multi-GPU test on the last page. However, while we did use high, the cost for moving up to medium is barely there. I would suggest using Ultra if you have the frame rate for it, as it's hardly a GPU intensive leap. However, if you are below 60 FPS, or below whatever frame rate you target, there's a lot to benefit from dropping to medium. We saw a boost of 16 FPS at 1080p, 11 FPS at 1440p, and 6 FPS at 4K. The game still looked superb too. Dropping to low was much more noticeable, as it heavily changed lighting, smoke, and shadows for the game. However, the performance leap was huge. 64 FPS higher at low than at ultra at 1080p alone. For those on older hardware, this kind of boost can be a huge benefit, so well done to the developers for keeping our options open. The RX 580 isn't as fast as the GTX 1660 Ti we tested above. However, it still scored 60 FPS at 1080 Ultra. What's strange is performance went up 8 FPS at 1440p, maybe an error, but we tried three times and got similar results much to my confusion. Regardless, both High and Ultra are similar performance as we saw with the Nvidia card above. For 1440p, we had to drop down to medium or low to get good frame rates. However, the difference from High to Low was shocking. 31 FPS leaps up to 66 FPS, so again, giving legs to older hardware here. 4K was out of the question, but we did gain a whopping 13 FPS at 4K Low vs Ultra. That's more than 50% increase in FPS.
