Rare Explains Dynamic Matchmaking in Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves Dynamic Matchmaking explained.

There’s been a lot of talk about Sea of Thieves since it entered Closed Beta. As gamers explored its open world and hidden treasures, they quickly started to report on their most interesting findings. One particularly interesting piece of news involved a rather impressive statistic. It looked like 100 players could be in the world at once in Sea of Thieves. With Battle Royale games gaining more and more popularity, Rare Studio has decided to issue a statement in order to avoid confusion. Apparently, the original statement was incorrect, as stated by Rare Studio Head Craig Duncan on Twitter.

Craig Duncan’s official statement:

“Lots of #SeaOfThieves articles popping up, hard to keep up but noticing a few saying 100 players in the world – this is incorrect – we think of Sea of Thieves as a coop adventure where you encounter other players in the world, encounter frequency and variety is what is magic about Sea of Thieves.

Our vision is you and your crew embarking on adventures together, seeing those ships on the horizon or in the world & knowing they are another crews of real players on their own adventure & not knowing their intent or if they have treasure on board, we dynamically matchmake.

It’s variable, we add ships (not players) to each instance of the world, if ships leave we fill with new ones, if you end up being on your own we migrate you to another server – it’s all very clever – I’ve talked to press about this in a few interviews this week.”

Sea of Thieves will come out on March 20 for PC and Xbox One. The great news is that there will be full cross-play and cross-buy functionality through Xbox Play Anywhere. With the delay of Red Dead Redemption 2, Sea of Thieves has a good chance at success this spring. What do you think about this upcoming co-op game so far?
