Rare’s Dinosaur Planet N64 ROM Now Playable!

It’s been a long time since I heard of Dinosaur Planet, and that’s no big surprise, given that 1) it was being made in the Nintendo 64 era, and 2) it was technically cancelled. I say technically, as it was never released, but it is said that Shigeru Miyamoto saw it and felt it should be Star Fox in the game. It later released as Star Fox Adventures on the Gamecube and the rest is history!

Of course, nobody ever expected a copy of the original to surface after all this time, but Forest of Illusion has leaked Rare’s Dinosaur Planet ROM on Twitter! Now, keep in mind that while the game was cancelled, it was pretty much complete before they changed it. That means the ROM uploaded is from a near-final build, and is almost playable to the finish; it’s said a few ROM hacks should be able to fix it up though.

Interestingly, no emulator will run it perfectly just yet either, so expect a few graphical glitches until there’s a patch. However, if you have a flash cart and a Nintendo 64, it should run great on that.

What Forest of Illusion Had to Say

“We purchased this disc containing the build from a private game collector in Sweden. The file date lists the build as being from December 1st 2000. It seems to be quite a late build of the game which is great, but it will need some hacking to be fully playable to the end.”

You can download the ROM for Dinosaur Planet from here. Try to grab it before Nintendo attempts to have it removed. It’s a great piece of gaming history and amazing to see what the game could have been on the Nintendo 64, before it became Star Fox Adventures!
