Razer BlackShark Battlefield 3 Edition PC Gaming Headset Review

In the past many Razer peripherals have been handed an award, whether they are a great performer, or are so good they get the editors choice award. Each award is justified so we don’t want you to think any bias is involved. Razer are one of the biggest, if not the biggest gaming peripherals brand so nothing less should be expected. With the BlackSharks, we have been thoroughly impressed through out the reviewing period, which isn’t much of a surprise as Razer continue to deliver.

The overall style of the BlackSharks is very fitting for it’s intended audience, yet it looks different enough to stand out from many of it’s competitors making it appealing to not just Battlefield 3 user, so much so that Razer have since released a standard edition of the BlackShark, which is aimed at all gamers as it features the typical Razer colour scheme. Since the construction of the headset is relatively simple and makes use of metal, smaller drivers and very little plastic, the headset itself is very light thus incredibly comfortable. The extra attention to detail, like the stitching and the leatherette do really give the headset a look and feel of quality, something we feel is needed more with some of the headsets that are currently on the market.

It’s not just the style that has got our attention, the audio quality is superb for gaming and listening to music after a little tweaking. We rarely get a headset that has too much bass, so it makes a change having to reduce it. This additional bass however means the gaming experience is greatly enhanced when playing games riddled with explosions and vehicles.

The only major drawback to the BlackSharks is the lack of any positional audio, whether virtual or true, although just like the styling, this is purely subjective and could be argued that if you want to have surround sound when watching films, you should with a proper surround sound setup. The main reason we see this as one of the few drawbacks is because of the price – which is the other. With an RRP of $129.99 (approx £85) and the standard edition coming in at $119.99 (approx £80), the price is pretty steep considering the other offerings on the market. That said, if you have cash to splash these would make a perfect addition to any gamers out there who love the look and play BF3.

So overall Razer have produced yet another outstanding product, that not only looks great, but sound great and fits their target audience perfectly. The BlackSharks were a pleasure to use and really helped create the true gaming experience.
