Razer Buys OUYA’s Software Assets

After it managed to raise its value to a cool $1 billion, Razer has announced its very first acquisition: the software assets of OUYA – a well-known Android gaming platform for the TV. As a result, OUYA users will soon be offered a steady migration path to the Forge TV micro-console and Serval controller, as Razer wants these users to bring their accounts, controllers and games to the Cortex TV platform. Furthermore, the company also seeks to add multiple new games to the recently acquired Android platform by investing significantly in various development and publisher programs. The OUYA store will be re-launched as Cortex for Android TV in due time, and even though Razer has no interest in OUYA hardware, it will publish Android TV content and Android TV console games as a separate interest under the OUYA moniker.

The transaction itself was closed on June 12, 2015, but no exact details were disclosed. Razer’s Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan stated the following:

“Razer has a long-term vision for Android TV and Android-based TV consoles, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box and Alibaba Tmall Box, to which OUYA already publishes. OUYA’s work with game developers, both triple A and indies, went a long way in bringing Android games to the living room and Razer intends to further that work. This acquisition is envisaged to usher more developers and content to the Android TV platform.”
