Reddit Launches Massive Crack-Down on Nazi Groups

Nazi’s get jackbooted off Reddit

My opinion of Reddit is rather like my opinion of America. It’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. Don’t get me wrong, Reddit has some amazingly interesting feeds to investigate and get involved in. Additionally, their AMA’s (ask me anything’s) are often quite entertaining. Particularly the disastrous ones such as the game on seller G2A recently experienced. There is, however, a sub-section of Reddit which is largely completely unnecessary.

By and large, Reddit is a tolerant website. I can’t necessarily say the same about some of the people who create content on it, but largely speaking they’ll allow a discussion about practically anything. There are some exceptions to posters or specific topics which have been banned, but by and large, they set a line in the sand and as long as you do not cross it, you can continue to discuss the point.

In a report via CNET, Reddit has today launched a massive crackdown on hate groups within the website as practically every pro-Nazi feed has been banned.

About time too!

I daresay many of you are thinking ‘why allow them in the first place’ and in fairness, it’s a valid point. It does, however, go against the free speech that Reddit likes to try and promote. The posting website has encouraged since it’s foundation in 2005 an ‘anything goes’ style of management.

It’s such free expression in which a Redditor posted his progress on uploading 1.8pb of porn to an unlimited cloud.

In recent changes to the regulations, however, the website has said that any posts of groups which: “encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or a group of people,” will be removed and/or banned.

The changes have been made to their original ‘policy’ which was only itself released in 2015. Despite the restrictions, I think the vast majority of its users will not have a problem.

Do you use Reddit? Do you think these restrictions go against the nature of the website? Or do you think that there are lines which shouldn’t be crossed? – Let us know in the comments!
