Reddit Enables Video Uploading Feature

Reddit is the #4 most visited website in the US and is ranked #9 worldwide in 2017. The popular news aggregator and discussion website has grown by leaps and bounds from the initial version 12 years ago but its expansion has been slow. In fact it only enabled direct image uploading last year. Other social media and discussion websites already have this basic feature from the get-go.

Before that, Reddit users had to rely on 3rd party image hosting sites such as Imgur and Giphy. The same is true for sharing audio via Soundcloud and videos via YouTube or other tube sites. These sites, especially the smaller ones are glad for the traffic boost. However, they had to know at the back of their minds that Reddit is eventually going to move to self-hosting for all other files.

Native Video Uploads Enabled

Similar to images, users can now also upload videos directly when they create a post. It even accepts MP4 and MOV files directly from mobile devices. Unlike YouTube however, the videos are limited to 15-minute lengths. There is even an MP4 converter and simple editor on the mobile app.

Reddit will still continue to support third-party linking however since they are a news aggregator website. The new native video upload feature however is a convenient way for users to post original faster without having to open more than one window. This is especially handy on the smartphone users with the Reddit app.
