Redditor Tests Amazon Unlimited Cloud Storage With 1.8PB of Porn!

We know that unlimited cloud storage plans are not truly unlimited. However, few actually went far enough to test the limits of these plans. When it comes to Amazon, reddit user beaston02 has decided to test the service using a rather unconventional method. He created a series of scripts that recorded no less than 1.8 petabytes of porn. Well, recorded live cam sessions, to be precise. It took him about six months to collect one petabyte, which is one million gigabytes by the way. In June, Amazon’s cloud storage plan was shut down. While many believe that beaston02 himself was the cause of this, he has denied this rumor publicly.

Could You Watch 1.8 Petabytes of Porn?

Technically, sure. You’d need a lot of free time, though, as this amount translates to about 23.4 years of HD-TV video. The sessions that we’re talking about here are of lower quality. Therefore, at 720p it would take 102 years of straight calendar time to view them all. Lower the quality to 480p and you’re looking at 293 years and six months. When asked about his motivations and results, beaston02 stated the following:

“Ever since I got into computers, I found myself learning more, and faster when it was something more interesting. Call me crazy, but women interest me more than most other things on the internet and there is a huge amount of data being created daily, so it was a good fit for the project.”

As far as shutting down the scripts, he clarified:

“I know plenty of people have labeled me some huge pervert or someone with a huge porn addiction, but that’s really not me at all. I have more of a problem with collecting or hoarding data than I do with porn. The project ran its course, I got the knowledge I was hoping to get, and I just had no interest in it anymore.”

What Happened to the Scripts? Asking for a friend…

Beaston02 made the scripts available on GitHub, and soon enough, another redditor named  -Archivist started his own “Petabyte Porn Project.” There’s nothing illegal with recording and storing live streams, but it’s definitely a gray area morality-wise. That’s probably why Beaston02 asked that any content gathered by the scripts would not be sold or shared on other websites.
