Redditors’ PSU is Full of Iron Shavings to Make it Heavy… And Then It Gets Worse!

You don’t have to go too far through sites like Amazon to find a crappy power supply, they are still out there and typically, if the price is too good to be true, it’s likely a box of scrap. However, for one unlucky Redditor, it literally was a box of scrap. While you shouldn’t open your PSU if you don’t know what you’re doing, RedditCringe990 on PCMR did just that and discovered that their Equites T500 power supply was beyond dangerous. It is a PSU, but it most certainly isn’t 500W, and it has zero over-current protection, and instead of a big transformer, there’s a literally box of iron filings thrown in there that serves no purpose other than to make it feel a bit heavier.

PSU is Full of Iron Shavings

Typically a good quality PSU is heavier, and if you pick up a unit and it’s light as a feather, well then, that’s a huge red flag right there. The higher the wattage, you’ll typically find the PSU gets heavier too. That’s why this appears to be a really painfully cheap 200-250W generic power unit, and an old one at that with components from brands we’ve never heard of. However, the worst thing is that it comes with zero power safety features. This thing is a PC killer and a serious fire and shock hazard all in one neat little package.

Is there a genuine reason this cheap PSU has a block of iron filings in it or are they trying to make it feel heavy?

Honest, if you’re looking for a cheap PSU, they do exist, but you have to be realistic with your requirements and often a decent PSU that’s been partly used would be a better option than jumping on Temu or Wish for a cheeky bargain. If you do need PSU advice, hit us up on Discord or check out our PSU reviews here, we’re always happy to help.

For now though, for the love of god, don’t buy an Equites T500.
