It seems that quite a few female members of Reddit are rushing to leave the company, as early July saw the departure of admin Victoria Taylor followed by interim CEO Ellen Pao and engineering chief Bethanye Blount. The most recent departure is that of Reddit’s head of community, Jessica Moreno, who originally joined the firm in 2011 alongside her husband Dan McComas. The move could be related to the website’s new content policy, which aims to clarify exactly what is considered as “offensive content” in Reddit posts. The policy states that post that incite harassment are utterly bannable, while subreddits who keep hateful discussions in theory only are allowed to exist.
However, the official statement regarding Moreno’s decision states that she is actually looking forward to spending more time with her family in Salt Lake City. You can read the statement below.
“I have enjoyed my time at Reddit but after four years I feel that it’s time for me to move on. While I am working with Steve on a transition plan, I am looking forward to taking time off to spend with my family. It was a difficult decision to make right now as Reddit is taking difficult steps in a much needed positive direction. I’m excited to see the progress being made and glad I could be a part of it.”
In turn, Reddit’s representatives said their own goodbyes:
“Jessica is going to return to Salt Lake City to be with her family, but we’ve yet to settle on a date. We’re grateful for her invaluable contributions to our community, from Secret Santa to industry-leading policy changes, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”
