Dawn of War used to be an excellent gaming series, then along came Dawn of War 3 and got it completely wrong. The switch to the MOBA style from an RTS based game was clearly not what the fans wanted.
As such, game developer Relic has formally announced that due to poor sales, Dawn of War 3 will no longer receive any further content. It is officially, abandoned.
By far and away, my favourite game in the series was the original DoW. The first game was an excellent real-time strategy that encouraged bold tactics and base building. When the sequel came out, it was decent, but still nowhere near as good. The emphasis on the base building had been significantly toned down, but overall it was still a reasonably enjoyable game.
Dawn of War 3, however, was a fresh new direction for the game. Focusing more on a MOBA style of play. Put simply, it was a massive misjudgment of the fanbase and sales were accordingly poor.
In a report via PCGamesN, Relic has formally announced that Dawn of War 3 has officially been abandoned for any further development. “While Dawn of War III has a dedicated player base, it didn’t hit the targets we were expecting at launch, and it hasn’t performed the way we hoped since. When a game underperforms, plans need to change,” adding that they “simply don’t have the foundation we need to produce major content.”
This announcement has put the future of the series in some doubt. Relic has, however, said that they are: “working closely with Sega and Games Workshop to determine the best course of action while shifting focus to other projects within our portfolio.”
My advice would be to shift back towards an RTS game. The MOBA market was simply the wrong direction. It didn’t attract new players and it certainly wasn’t what the fans wanted. In addition, while RTS isn’t exactly a popular genre at the moment, there is always room for an excellent title.
