Remix IO – The 4K Nougat-Powered All-in-One Device Hits Kickstarter

You might remember the Remix Mini which was the first real Android-powered mini-PC and now Jide is back with the successor to this device called the Remix IO. The new Remix IO has hit Kickstarter where it currently can be yours for just $99 with the Early-Bird specials.

The Remix IO is an Android Nougat-powered all-in-one device with 4K-output that can be used as a set-top box, gaming console, and PC in one device. It’s naturally powered by the Remix OS that’s also available for free download to be used on your old leftover hardware.

The hardware specifications aren’t incredible compared to our normal work and gaming systems, but they still get very close to those of the Nvidia Shield which currently is the most powerful 4K set-top device. It comes with an RK3368 CPU Octa-Core 64bit ARM Cortex-A53 1.5GHz processor and has 2GB DDR3L RAM. It comes with 16GB built-in storage which can be expanded up to 128GB or more through the use of the internal microSD card slot. There are no USB 3 ports, but there are four USB 2.0 ports for controllers, keyboard, and mouse input and there is an HDMI 2.0 output for up to 4K 60FPS output. Legacy monitors and projectors can easily be connected through the D-Sub VGA connector. The Remix IO can gain a connection with the world through dual-band wireless 802.11ac or through the built-in ethernet port.

The Remix IO features a dual-mode OS, allowing the tiny system to work as both an office system and a tv box. The TV mode features large icons and an easy to use interface from your couch which also features full remote control. Then there’s also the core aspect of Remix OS which is a full desktop system with keyboard and mouse support as well as full multitasking, multi-window functionality.

The TV mode is probably the most interesting for most readers here as they already got their main system for the office work. It has been built to support both normal Android apps as well as Android TV apps, giving you access to over 2 million apps that you know from your other Android-powered devices.

An awesome feature in the Remix IO is the Gaming Toolkit which allows you to map touchscreen gestures to buttons, allowing you to play those games built for touchscreen with your controller too. After all, how many of us have a touch screen TV and who would want to stand in front of it to play? Sounds like Jide thought of everything here.

There are two great things to this campaign, the first being the estimated delivery date. Everything is pretty much ready which means that backers will get their units in March 2017. That’s a short waiting time for a Kickstarter campaign and it isn’t the company’s first product which means that they know what they’re doing. Another great thing about it is that it’s created from China. This in itself isn’t the good news, that comes the day you’ll receive your pledge reward. In my experience, Asians are far better at getting your items to you at the lowest cost, including import tax.
