Putting my PC gaming purchases to one side, I do still occasionally dabble in the realms of physical media. You know, actually buying a real-world tangible copy of a game. This is, however, pretty much exclusive now to when I’m buying a gift for someone (actually having something to unwrap is always nice). – It seems, however, that following a report via DualShockers, it has been an abysmally poor year for UK physical sales as a report has confirmed, at least under their research, that this only accounted for circa 10% of all gaming sales in 2022!
Put simply, in 2022, we in the UK went 90% digital in our game purchases!
While 90% is clearly quite a huge number, I should note that the research is a little vague on two specific points (at least as I read it). Firstly, it doesn’t seem to take 2nd-hand gaming purchases into consideration which is clearly a major factor in physical sales these days. Secondly, it’s hard to say whether the figure is inclusive of those heavily controversial things called microtransactions.
If it is, then this clearly brings that 90% hugely into perspective. And, incidentally, makes this research much more pleasant news for physical retailers. Pretty much all microtransactions are, of course, digital and I know for a fact that people spend a small fortune on things like Fortnite skins and FIFA Ultimate Team packs. – If this is a part of that 90% figure, then I wouldn’t be surprised if it was gobbling up about 20-30% of it. Perhaps even more!
If you do, however, want to check out the report for yourself, click on the link here! – Make no bones about it though, the UK is definitely swinging heavily in favour of digital downloads over physical media! Call me old fashioned though, but there is still something nice about having a gaming box you can hold in your hands!
