Journalist Christopher Dring has revealed that, based on information he has received, third-party support for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will be significantly stronger than it was for the original Nintendo Switch. This shift could potentially marginalize indie developers, who benefited from a lack of big-name publishers supporting the original console at launch.
Dring commented on a Video Games Chronicles report discussing third-party games planned for Nintendo Switch 2, including titles from Ubisoft and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. He noted that the new console will likely receive substantial backing from major publishers, a stark contrast to the original Nintendo Switch, which faced skepticism from the gaming industry due to its technical limitations compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
When the Nintendo Switch launched, its technical specs and industry doubts left room for indie developers and smaller publishers to thrive. The system’s eventual success, however, demonstrated its potential as a platform for both major releases and indie titles, becoming one of the best-selling consoles in history.
Now, it seems that larger publishers are eager to capitalize on the success of the next Nintendo console. This increased support could bring new opportunities for major developers but may limit the visibility and success of indie games.
While there is still no official announcement regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, it is widely rumored to be set for a 2025 release, with numerous leaks providing details about the upcoming console.
