Any kind of market share data provides a great insight into the current performance of hardware manufacturers across key sectors of the industry. This has been particularly prevalent when analysing AMD’s position when it comes to discrete graphics cards. Even though it doesn’t grab as much attention as the graphics card market, sales of gaming laptops are increasing at a dramatic pace and it’s essential to observe market trends. According to the latest findings by DigiTimes and the Topology Research Institute, MSI is in a commanding position and accounts for an estimated 19% of gaming laptops sold. Please note, the term gaming laptop refers to units equipped with a GTX 950M or higher.
As you can see from the graph below, ASUS remains in a competitive 2nd place with 15% market share while Dell scores a figure of 9% due to their Alienware brand. However, ASUS have contested the figures shared by MSI and claim to be the leading company in this growing field. Apparently, an Apple Daily report shared by DigiTimes explained that the different stems from the two research firms using different metrics to classify a gaming laptop. More specifically, MSI sets a higher standard for what it deems to be considered a gaming laptop.
Despite this confusion, it’s a very promising result for MSI, especially given the upcoming release of their new Pascal laptop range. Eric Kuo, Vice President at MSI said:
“MSI has been cultivating in gaming industry for many years and overtaking its competitors by launching out numerous gaming products with unique features, and making strong effort to keep its gaming notebooks up-to-date to satisfy gamers’ strict requirements. 2016 is the year of VR, MSI has prepared a series of VR Ready notebooks to satisfy the strong VR demand.”
