Resident Evil 2 is one of the most atmospheric survival horror games ever conceived and it is rightfully idolized by fans of the genre. Unfortunately, the game is starting to show its age due to the clunky texture work and lack of visual sharpness. However, an indie studio called InvaderGamers decided to remodel the entire game in Unreal Engine 4. This project will be released for free and features improved lighting effects, more vibrant particles and smoother animations. The time required and programming skills needed to make an authentic remaster is staggering. I am surprised how good the remake looks despite being in such an early phase of development. The video below really accentuates how wonderful this creation could be.
One major caveat is this fan service project has probably been under the radar and not bound by copyright law. I’m concerned Capcom will act in a hasty manner and demand the cancellation of this venture given the recent press coverage. Another point to take into consideration is Capcom have already remastered the original Resident Evil so the sequel might already be in production. Nevertheless, Resident Evil 2 Reborn emphasizes how passionate the gaming community is and I hope this labor of love comes to fruition.
