Resident Evil Films Reboots Incoming!

Is has been confirmed that the Resident Evil Film franchise has not finished after all as Constantin Film says that a reboot is in development. The announcement comes following the successful Milla Jovovich franchise concluding with the ironically titled “Final Chapter”.

Why is the Resident Evil Film getting a re-boot?

Simply put, because the franchise made money, a lot of it. Is has been reported via Variety that the franchise has earned a whopping $1.2b, not bad for what started out as a reasonably low-budget, low-expectation flick.

I watched the original Resident Evil film at the cinema, I was expecting it to be awful. Not an unfair assessment when considering how poor video game/film crossovers usually are. However, I was pleasantly surprised that despite an obviously restricted budget, the film was much better than it had any right to be. Much similar can be said about everything that followed, they were good watching for a (no pun intended) ‘brain dead’ evening film.

I do however have a theory as to why the series is getting rebooted.

Resident Evil Film based on Resident Evil 7?

Resident Evil 7 was, for all intents and purposes, created in the style of a movie. The film was short, sharp, it had peaks, troughs and ended with quite a pleasant running time. It was also in itself a total re-boot of the series.

It provides the perfect format for a re-booted Resident Evil Film to be made. I know that Resident Evil 7 was not universally loved by all fans, but it was a brave step in a new direction. It can not be disputed that the recent film franchise had run its course with each following film basically being a stagnating re-hash of the previous.

As Resident Evil 7 took the game genre into a brave new direction, the film will surely be looking to do exactly the same.

When is the film due to be released?

Given that it is currently in development, don’t expect anything for at least 2-3 years. Given the success of the Resident Evil films and the successful break into China’s heavily censored market. A reboot will happen.

Paul Anderson, who wrote the previous films and directed four of them, is not expected to take part in this project. Rumours suggest he is set to create a “Monster Hunter” film.

Yes, A “Monster Hunter” film. More on that exciting news to come when we hear anything.
