Respawn Entertainment Teases Secret VR Shooter for Oculus

Respawn Entertainment and Oculus are teaming up for a super secret project, on the calendar for a 2019 release date. The company did not want to give any specifics but strongly hints that it will be a shooter of some sort. They have made two things certain however, this secret project is not in anyway a Star Wars or Titanfall project. The key clue to what this project is lies with the statement made by engineer Jon Shiring. He said they really “want to depict being a soldier in combat in a more fully fleshed out and realistic way”. The combat experience in VR will allow them to truly carve out an engrossing environment, “closer to what a soldier would experience”, adds CEO Vince Zampella.

The company of course is founded by Zampella and Jason West, the original developers of the Call of Duty franchise. Moreover, the teaser footage shows several historical war archival footage. Which hints that this could be a classic WW2 or WW1 game rather than a futuristic shooter. Either way, the company seems to be comfortable with doing both considering their resume. It would be great news for fans of the original Call of Duty to see the next evolution. The franchise has been quite stale for a while, and definitely deserves a refresh.

The teaser trailer also shows some of the work already in place for the project. Although some of the screens were blurred for the sake of keeping it secret for now.  No other information has been revealed by the company. However, they emphasize that “emotion” is a key aspect in this project. They are seeking to leverage VR’s capabilities to draw out various effects on the player that a regular 3D game cannot. Looks like we all would just have to wait and see for several more months to find out what it is.
