Retail Information Suggests Nvidia 4080 Isn’t Proving Popular With Consumers!

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 is undoubtedly an excellent graphics card (and if you want proof of that, check out our review of five different variants of it here!). – With that being said, however, that’s not to say that it doesn’t have its problems (and no, I’m not referring to that now cancelled 12GB variant).

With many retailers charging around £1,400 for it, it’s hardly an accessible (or more accurately, affordable) option for all consumers, and, at the moment, the only alternative from Team Green is the even more expensive 4090! – With that being said, however, following a Twitter post from ‘@hms1193‘ it would appear that, so far at least, the 4080 isn’t providing to be anywhere near as popular with consumers as the Nvidia 4090!

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 – Great GPU, But Not Selling Well!

According to the source, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 has currently sold around 30,000 units since hitting retailers last week. When compared to the 4090, however, this is notably way below comparative sales during their initial launch windows where the 4090 was pretty much sold out worldwide. – Adversely, the 4080 is easily available to purchase right now. And you’re spoiled for choice in terms of AIB models/variants!

Now yes, the 4090 has basically had an extra 4 weeks on the market, so of course, it would almost certainly have more sales. Based on the figures, however, it would suggest that the 4090 might be outselling the 4080 which is something of a moderate clearly a surprise. Why would this be the case though? Well, ultimately, it would appear that it comes down to price!

Pay More – Get More!

With the Nvidia 4080 currently retailing for around £1,400, the general consensus from consumers is that while it is an excellent graphics card, it’s just too damn expensive for its own good. – Put simply, for consumers who can afford to spend this much money on a graphics card, why not spend just £300-£400 more and get the significantly more potent 4090?

Additionally, Nvidia also has two other problems which have likely impacted the initial success of the 4080. There is the ongoing matter of the 12VHPWR adaptor cable saga. And then, of course, you also have the fact that the Radeon 7900 XT and 7900 XTX are just 4 weeks away from release which, according to AMD, will compete with the 4080 but come at a much lower MSRP of $899 and $999 respectively!

Overall, for as great as the 4080 is, at the moment my gaze is purely and firmly fixed on what AMD has on the horizon before I make any kind of decision as to where my long overdue GPU upgrade will lie. And, I suspect, many others do too which is probably why the 4080 simply isn’t flying off store shelves!
