Earlier this week we got the news that Nvidia 40XX-powered laptops would officially make their retail debut on February 8th with both 4080 and 4090 variants being finally available to purchase. – While this was certainly very exciting, however, and particularly so into the very promising rumours surrounding their performance (ie. that the 4090 might beat a 3090 desktop equivalent) there was still one pretty monumental huge elephant still lurking in the room.
Namely, exactly how much we could expect these to cost.
Well, while we didn’t get any information on that then, a report via Videocardz may have given us our first confirmation of how much 40XX laptops are going to cost. And if you suffer from a heart condition, you might want to look away now!
The information has come via US retailer Microcenter, and, overall, it’s not very good! – Put simply, if you were planning on getting a 4090 model (from MSI at least as per this leak) it would appear that you should budget for a figure of at least $4,000. And just to make this sound worse than it already is, we shouldn’t forget that in many cases, despite the exchange rate, Dollar to Pound or Dollar to Euro comparisons rarely work in our favour.
In other words, this $4,000 might directly translate to €4,000/£4,000, but don’t be surprised if it’s closer to €4,500/£4,500 in your region!
And what about the entry-level side of things? Well, depending on what kind of potency you want from your processor, it looks like both 4050 and 4060 variants will cost around $1,200 which, again, isn’t exactly great. Well, unless these graphics cards offer ridiculously decent performance, which, given the history of the mobile SKU in prior Nvidia laptop generations, doesn’t fill me with confidence.
Overall, it looks like Nvidia 40XX laptops are going to be expensive. And incredibly so for the most potent of models. – Let’s be honest though, are we really surprised by this anymore?
