There was a moment, about this time last year actually, that we were wondering if we would ever see season 3 of Rick and Morty. It had been so long since season 2 ended and based upon its amazing combination of comedy and satire we were struggling to wait for more.
When the news that the next season would start airing on April 1st was announced, no one believed it. I mean, come on, April Fools? It was, however, in a typical style of the show one of the greatest mind tricks ever. It was a legitimate announcement and they deliberately did it because everyone would think it was fake. Looking back on it now, a very bold marketing strategy, but one that has clearly paid off.
In a report via Polygon, Rick and Morty are not only Adult Swim’s biggest success, but it has practically secured the future of the series for years to come.
Not all fans liked Season 3. Many felt that it drifted too far away from its roots or perhaps had gotten a little convoluted for a cartoon show. While such criticism is valid, there are instances within Rick and Morty that criticism is easier to understand.
Even the VR game, for as fun as it was, had its critics.
The figures for season 3 do not lie though. The first episode garnered over 11m views, which for a cartoon, particularly an adult one, is incredible. In addition, throughout the season it has held regularly high figures with the finale also gaining massive viewing figured.
