Roccat Kone EMP Gaming Mouse Review

Performance

The ROCCAT Kone has long been one of my favourite game mice, and the EMP certainly takes that to the next level. It has highest specifications than the original mouse, so it doesn’t have much trouble delivering better performance. The sensor operates at a much wider DPI range, allowing you to go from a crawl of 100 DPI, all the way up to a breakneck speed of 120000 DPI. I would point out though, that on this mouse, anything about 4000 feels unusable,  at least until you tinker a lot with the default settings and lower the overall sensitivity of the mouse.

Crazy high DPI do have their uses though, allowing for insanely fast-tracking over a map in MOBA games, or fast vehicle aiming and turning in FPS titles. The sensor feels smoother and sharper than the original mouse, and than my own daily gamer, the Roccat Tyon with its 8200 DPI sensor.

Lightweight Design

The mouse is lighter now too, albeit only by a few grams. However, it does feel lighter and more nimble, and it glides with ease. One thing I always loved about Roccat mouse is how balanced they feel, and the EMP pivots around its middle and allows for smooth and fast aiming despite its larger design. The ergonomics are certainly tailored towards a more claw/palm rest hybrid grip, and that works great for me, but it’s a fairly subjective thing choosing a grip type.

The RGB lighting, which you’ve seen in action a little already, is stunning too. There are multiple lights down the left and right side. This allows you to set four unique colours on each corner of the mouse, as well as flow and other effects that allow for the colours to mix and “flow” down the strip of lighting.

Swarm

Customisation is done via the Roccat Swarm software. It’s one of the best software suites out there, allowing you to tweak all of your Roccat peripherals at once. You can apply macros, reprogram any button and Shift+ function, adjust the sensor performance, and much more. Of course, you can save all your settings directly to the mouse too.

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
