Roccat Renga PC and PS4 Gaming Headset Review

A Closer Look

The headset is super light, which is great for those long gaming sessions as it’s not going to make you feel worn out after extended wear. AS you can see, there’s a lot of plastic on the drivers, but it’s been treated to a textured and slightly glossy look, giving it a really cool premium quality look and feel.

The driver housing is quite big, with an inner foam padding protecting it, but there’s also an extended frame with cut-outs to allow airflow around your ear. This is really cool, as it gives you a surface area for thick leather pads that go around the ear, but keeps the drivers themselves much closer to your ear than most over-ear headphones, while still allowing for ventilation to stop your ears from getting warm and sweaty; a common problem for most leather padded ear cups.

the padding is quite thick, but also soft and forgiving, allowing for a very close and comfortable fit around your ears that’s going to give you a big comfort and acoustic advantage in those long gaming sessions. You’ll also notice that the side of the ear cup reads “Studio Grade Sound”. The headphone cable is hard-wired to the base of the left ear cup, but it’s securely fitted and there’s a protective bit of plastic to ensure the cable doesn’t suffer from damage after extended use.

One thing I really love about this headset is the headband, it’s two very flexible metal rods that always keep the headset in the right place and keep it snug to your ears, but they’re incredibly flexible too. You can twist the headset to an extreme and it doesn’t feel like you’re doing any harm to it at all, it’ll just spring right back into place when you let go; it will take a lot of trouble to cause damage to the Renga.

Getting the right fit is very easy too, as the inner leather headband is spring mounted to auto adjust to the wearer. What’s really nice is that the headband is super wide, meaning it helps distribute the weight of the headset better, making it even more comfortable to wear for hours on end.

The performance of these drivers is certainly impressive, with flawless clarity from low volume right up to the maximum. The bass is crystal clear, the mid-tones are detailed and the treble rings out true and clear. I threw a wide range of music at them and everything sounded nicely balanced. Roccat claimed the bass was powerful, but I didn’t think it was overly so, but it definitely has “good” balanced bass, rather than just boosted for no reason like many other gaming headsets. While gaming, the drivers really bring out a lot of detail, but they sound just as adept at movies, music, games, or anything else for that matter, making them a solid all-rounder for day-to-day desktop use.

“Studio Grade Sound” is something I’ll agree with, the detail and quality is exceptional, far better than I would have expected. The only thing that falls short is the maximum volume, as it leaves me wanting just that little bit more. It’s not that they’re not loud enough, but that there are some scenarios where you need that extra boost to hear the source, or maybe you just like your music on the edge of reasonable, but a little more would certainly be welcomed here.

The microphone folds up out of the way when not in use, so no need to obstruct your view if you’re just playing a single player game or watching a movie.

The boom is nice and flexible, allowing you to find the optimal speaking position. It’s a really good microphone too, as it doesn’t pick up too much ambient noise, but gives good clarity for in-game chat on the PlayStation, on PC or for making Skype calls. It’s actually the drivers that I like the most though, as for voice chat, they give you a more natural sound to the voices of those you’re chatting with. This would be a great headset for those who make a lot of calls from their desktop or for general office use.
