RTX 5090 for Laptops Performs Half as Well as Desktop RTX 5090
The new NVIDIA RTX 50 Series graphics cards are now available for laptops, with prices starting at $2,199 for the RTX 5080, the least expensive model. However, the RTX 5090, the most powerful version in this series, is drawing attention for the wrong reasons. Early reviews suggest that the RTX 5090 for laptops performs at only about half the level of the RTX 5090 for desktops.
Performance Test Results
According to tests conducted by Notebookcheck, the laptop version of the RTX 5090 is significantly slower than its desktop counterpart. The review showed that, in the game Baldur’s Gate 3, the laptop version of the RTX 5090 delivered 52% less performance than the desktop version. The difference was also seen in the 3DMark test, where the laptop version showed a 51% decrease in performance compared to the desktop version.
The desktop RTX 5090 has a power consumption of 575W, while the laptop version has a significantly lower power draw of 175W, reducing it by 400W.
Price Comparison
It’s also important to note that for the price of a laptop with the RTX 5090, which starts at $2,899, you could purchase just the equivalent GPU if you were building a desktop PC.
