RTX 5090 – Has A New Driver Improved Performance & The 1% Lows?

When the RTX 5090 reviews were released, we along with others found performance to be strong, but it seemed to be lacking in the 1% lows, and it’s something that I wanted to investigate further into, from generation to generation, we saw some a decent uplift. Value aside, I felt that maybe there was some performance being left on the table, especially in terms of getting the very best gameplay experience. When it comes to 1% lows, they are critical for delivering smooth and consistent gameplay, and they seem just to fall short of expectations.

Nvidia RTX 5090 Founders Edition Re-Tested

Since the review embargo lifted, NVIDIA has released a new driver update, moving from version 571.86 to 572.02, which got us thinking—could this address the issues we saw in those 1% lows? Driver updates can often be the unsung heroes of GPU performance, ironing out quirks and boosting consistency in ways that can make a big difference, especially in demanding titles and especially on new hardware that hasn’t had time to mature. So, we decided it was worth taking another look and today, we’re diving back into the RTX 5090 to see just how much of an impact this latest driver might have made, but before we get into that, here’s a quick word from this video’s sponsor.

Ok, so let me start by saying that neither of these drivers are available to you, the consumer, and generally, that’s for a very good reason. Some retailers often jump the gun with new hardware releases, and this is NVIDIA’s way of stopping you from grabbing the hardware, grabbing the driver, and publishing information on a big scale. Instead, you’re left with a temporary paperweight, while us press and tech media scramble to get performance figures out under NDA in the form of a review embargo.

572.02 Driver

Once the 5090 was released, our special super secret area where we grab NVIDIA assets including drivers had updated from the 571.86 drivers we initially tested with, to the 572.02 drivers, ready to pave the way for other 50 series GPUs that are on the way. We looked at it and thought it would be good to see what that meant for the 5090, especially as the 1% low figures were much lower than we hoped for.

Another key reason that we’re on the right track, is that when we ran the few select tests on the RTX 5090 ASTRAL from ASUS, the results were dramatically better, and that was tested on the slightly newer driver. Before I get flamed for using different drivers in the comments, sometimes this is the case when releasing content in a timely manner, and if it’s that much of a big deal, we’ll post up some comparisons once we’re done.

So, could this driver update be the simple fix that would make the 5090 even better, or are we simply barking up the wrong tree, and the results would remain the same? Well, that’s what we’re going to find out today.
