Rumors Point to Nvidia Releasing Geforce GTX 2080 with Ampere GPU

Will the GTX 2080 feature an Ampere GPU?

We’ve seen our fair share of wild rumors lately, but this one is definitely one of the more daring ones. Apparently, Nvidia is preparing to release the GeForce GTX 2080 as soon as April. Better yet, the card would feature a GA104 Ampere GPU, which does seem a bit of a stretch. First of all, everyone was expecting Nvidia to release some form of Volta-based gaming solution. The straight jump to Ampere would mean saving Volta as an AI and HPC (high-performance computing) architecture, which is a bit unlikely at this point. Launching a new gaming architecture would cause quite a stir in the gaming world as well. As we all know, finding a decent graphics card in stock is already quite difficult because of the mining craze.

Where are these rumors coming from anyway?

We’ll let you judge the reliability of the information yourself, as it comes from a German-language website named 3DCenter. A recently posted article included pieces of information taken from a forum discussion. In that discussion, a forum member said that NVIDIA’s GP102 GPU, the one which powers the 1080 Ti and current-gen Titan, is no longer in production. This means that the 1080 Ti would disappear from stock pretty quickly.

Moreover, it’s worth noting what Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said during a recent earnings call: “Pascal to continue to be the world’s best gaming platform for the foreseeable future.” That makes an April launch quite unlikely for Nvidia, so make sure to take these rumors with a bit of salt. I am looking forward to Ampere, as I’m sure it will mean great things for the gaming industry.

However, I am not holding my breath for a spring release, particularly since it would mean such a dramatic jump over the promising Volta architecture.
