RUMOUR: NVIDIA Pushing 20-Series Volta GPU for Early Launch in Q3 2017

It seems like Intel is not the only company pushing their launch ahead of schedule. Rumours have surfaced from Chinese site MyDrivers that NVIDIA is also pushing to release their next-generation 20-series Volta GPU ahead of launch for Q3 2017. NVIDIA has promised that Volta will be using HBM2 memory although it is still not clear which manufacturing process it will be built on. NVIDIA’s current 10-series GPUs use 16nm TSMC FinFET but rumours earlier this year point to cutting edge 12nm TSMC FinFET being used.

Just like Intel, the driving force for moving the launch ahead of schedule supposedly is to enhance profits since sales at the beginning of the year is weaker compared towards the end. Intel is rumoured to not only be pushing their HEDT platform ahead of schedule but also pushing their next-generation mainstream desktop platform to launch within Q3 2017 instead of Q2 2018 initially.

According to MyDrivers, one unfortunate news however is that it is likely for NVIDIA to raise prices for individual cards in their entire lineup during the launch. This will most likely be true unless AMD’s next generation Vega could pose a significant threat to NVIDA’s profits. Although AMD’s most recent launch involving the 500-series Radeon video cards are only slightly faster than NVIDIA’s current 10-series offerings.
