Rumour: Sony Axes PlayStation 4 DRM To Gain Advantage Over The Xbox One

According to an apparent insider source that GameTrailers were able to speak with the PlayStation 4 will axe all digital rights management schemes on the PlayStation 4 to gain a competitive advantage over Microsoft’s Xbox One. This move apparently comes in response to the massive criticism and backlash that Microsoft has endured after suggesting that used titles could have an activation fee.

By making the PlayStation 4 as open as possible Sony hope that it will attract developers and gamers alike and gain a nice advantage over Microsoft’s Xbox One. Other people in the know about the PlayStation 4 have also come out saying that its DRM scheme is being re-evaluted and a neoGAF user who made many correct pre-launch leaks stated:

“the past week’s PR nightmare for MS has not been lost on Sony and they, in fact, do have a used game ‘solution’ working and have been going back and forth for months on whether to use it. This past week is pushing them strongly into ‘Yeah, let’s not use that’.”

An official statement from Sony about how the PlayStation 4 will handle used games is expected in the coming months. I think Sony made a smart decision in letting Microsoft be the guinea pigs that test the water.

What are your thoughts on console DRM and used games?
