Russians Create a Space Robot That Looks like the Terminator

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw this robot for the first time was that it pretty much looks like a very early version of the Terminator. However, it’s probably way too early to fear it right now, especially since it was designed to operate in space. Dubbed Fyodor, it represents the culmination of years of effort by Russian officials in order to develop a completely new breed of military robots. According to the deputy prime minister of Russia, Dmitry Rogozin, the country is committed to moving the robotics race into space, and I have to admit that Fyodor certainly looks impressive.
In January, a video surfaced online that showed off what Fyodor is capable of, and this apparently includes welding and mimicking the hand movements of its human controller with great accuracy. As for the competition, NASA’s Robonaut 2 was showcased for the first time in 2011, and even though it was designed to help out astronauts on the International Space Station, it could also be designed to roam across the surface of Mars. Apart from going to Mars, it’s safe to assume that Fyodor can help out on the ISS too, especially given its dexterity-oriented skill set. No word on when Russia’s space robot will be ready to head into space, but we’ll definitely keep you posted as the story develops.
