Final Thoughts

How Much Is It?

Budget gaming just got a huge boost today. Sure, they’re not the ideal gaming solutions, but if you’re building a budget system and looking for cost-effective quad-core CPUs, these effectively come with a free GPU built-in and can give you a leg-up into the world of PC gaming if you need them to.

The AMD Ryzen 3 2200G is the cheapest of the bunch, at just $99, while the more powerful Ryzen 5 2400G is only $169.

Of course, you’ll still need a motherboard, such as the Gigabyte AB350N AM4 that we used, some fast memory, storage, and a PSU. However, since we found that both chips overclock well on their stock cooler, and you don’t need a GPU, you can still save a lot of money here.

Overview

We’ve already reviewed the Ryzen 3 2200G and the Ryzen 5 2400G, and I must admit I’m impressed with what they have to offer. Sure, they’re not going to beat out the more powerful Ryzen or even Intel CPUs paired with a dGPU, but it was never meant to. However, if you can find a CPU and GPU combination that can do what either of these CPUs can do, you buy it!

720p or 1080p?

We tested some well known and graphically demanding games today. Sure, we bumped the resolution down to 1280 x 720, but for a budget gaming experience that’s fine. You can still run your desktop in 1080p, or even 4K on these CPUs, but the games will benefit from a drop in pixels. 1080p gaming will deliver 30FPS and often above that at 1080p too if you’re less fussed about frame rate.

What Else Can I Play?

Not every game is so demanding, and if you’re eager to play games that have a few years on the clock, they should run with ease. Naturally, that will expand to emulated games, retro gaming, a lot of indie titles and similar. If you’re eager to push 4K 60FPS and beyond, then a Ryzen 7 CPU and VEGA 64 would likely be more your thing, but also about 10x the price of the 2200G.

Can you hit 60 FPS on these plucky little CPUs with VEGA cores? Absolutely, although your mileage may vary dependant on resolution and the game, it’s certainly possible, and that’s very impressive at this price range.
