Sackboy: A Big Adventure Might be Sony’s First PC Port Flop!

Announced just a couple of months ago, last week saw the official release of ‘Sackboy: A Big Adventure‘ on PC. – Representing what is arguably one of Sony’s biggest IPs (or at least one of their most recognisable mascots), you would’ve, therefore, probably expected the title to be both exceptionally popular, and more so, likely doing very well in terms of sales.
Well, in this regard, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. You see, while the reviews for it are certainly highly-positive, the latest figures from Steam show that ‘Sackboy: A Big Adventure’ might be set to become Sony’s first major PC porting flop!
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is Flopping on PC?
So, both critical and user reception for the Sackboy PC port has been good, so how on earth could this possibly end up being a flop? Well, how about the fact that less than a week from its launch, the point where you would usually expect a title to be at its highest level of popularity, the game has only so far managed to get a peak concurrent player count of just 610 (click here if you don’t believe me!).
Yes, at the game’s most popular point so far, it has only just barely managed to get just over 600 people playing it at the same time! – And even the average is pretty pathetic at just around circa 250! – And if this is the peak, then that clearly gives you a pretty solid indication that, so far, Sackboy is proving to be a monumentally huge flop on PC!
Why is Sackboy Failing With PC Gamers?
Ultimately, I think this question has two predominant answers. – Firstly, with a price tag of £49.99, this is rather a lot of money for what is (rightly or wrongly) perceived as a bit of a cutesy-poo 2D platformer. Secondly though, and I think this is likely the biggest issue, Sony barely gave Sackboy: A Big Adventure any kind of notable marketing ahead of its PC release.
As noted above, it was less than a month between the game’s official announcement and subsequent release. Not much time to build up hype for what should’ve arguably represented a license for Sony to print money!
While Steam sales will, of course, help bolster this figure in the future. Ultimately, I think the biggest problem Sackboy has on PC right now is that so few people actually know this port even exists! – With a peak player count of just 610 though, it does clearly beg the question as to how many copies this game has actually sold so far.
I mean, would a figure of circa 3,000 be about right if it’s averaging 200-250 and peaking at 600? – Let’s go nuts and say 10,000. – Any way you look at this, the numbers are massively below just what you and I would’ve expected, and, overall, it’s hard to escape the conclusion that Sackboy is flopping hard on PC. – But Sony probably only has themselves, and their lack of marketing, to blame for it!
