Volition has today announced that they will be closing down after 30 years of developing games.
Volition Games, best known for the Saints Row series has today announced on social media that they would be closing their doors after 30 years of producing games. This closure is suspected to effect around 300+ employees which is quite unfortunate as any closure in the gaming industry is. This closure is not entirely surprising though considering the poor performance of the recent Saints Row 2022 reboot as well as Agents of Mayhem the former leaving a very bad taste in fans of the Saints Row series mouth. The full statement can be read below.
Saints Row fans make it no secret that they love the first two games, I myself included in that. Unfortunately with this closure, any hope of a remaster of them is far gone even though that was already the case as the company had already supposedly confirmed there were no plans for a remaster. The only small glimmer of hope is that parent company Embracer Group are able to make something happen with the franchise.
I’ve recently been playing the Saints Row 2022 reboot since it released on Steam and I’ve got to be honest, I’m enjoying it but I’ll admit the characters and story are absolutely awful. There was only one moment near the end of the game where your boss felt like the same psychopath from the originals and not some forced psychopath like they are portrayed to be throughout the game. The same goes for the other characters, they just don’t have much personality other than “mechanic girl”, nerdy and doesn’t like wearing shirts. Even the villains were uninteresting and had no buildup.
The saving grace for the game is with the map which isn’t as good as SR2 Stilwater but is much better than Steelport and has a lot of detail combining aspects of Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Fransisco into Santo Ileso. The gameplay itself isn’t that bad either it’s fairly standard for Saints Row though some areas are lacking, most notably in the weapons as I found myself just pistol-whipping everyone instead of using any other weapons, though that is pretty much all I did in Saints Row 3 as well.
It’s a shame to see Volition close and I wish all the best for the talented devs at the company.
