Samsung have released details of two new external optical drives, the first is a slim portable Blu-ray writer the SE-506AB optical disk drive (ODD), and the other is the smart media hub SE-208BW optical disk drive (ODD).
The SE-506AB is available from the end of August for MSRP of $140 and features a slim design with a hi-glossy anti-scratch surface all at 12% smaller than their conventional drive so is ideal for mobile computing such as tablets or netbooks, the drive is powered by USB so doesn’t require an additional power lead, it is compatible with most operating systems and features buffer under-run.
The device also features exclusive AV connectivity technology which allows connection to multimedia TV’s with an available USB port for playback, improving on previous models by offering access to up to 5 sub-directories for up to 3000 files, speeds include: 6X BD-ROM, 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW reading and 6X BD-R, 6X BD-R Dual layer, 4X BD-R Quad layer, 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual layer, 6X DVD-R Dual layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW recording.
The new smart media hub SE-208BW optical disk drive (ODD) combines an optical drive with a wireless access point and repeater functionality to connect the drive to an Ethernet LAN cable which can amplify Wi-Fi signals, the device can connect via wireless to devices such as smart phones or a tablet PC to allow the back-up of data onto a CD or DVD.
The SE-208BW also supports Dynamic DNS so can be used as a private server, connect an external hard disk drive or USB memory drive and the Internet LAN cable to the SE-208BW and it becomes a personal Cloud Server, TV’s with DLNA compatibility can use Allshare allowing users to view drive content through the TV menu to play and record multimedia files onto CDs and DVDs, the external drive provides varied speeds across different data media types including: 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD reading and 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW recording.
The hub will be available early 2012 but prices aren’t yet known.
