Last year, we first brought you word of an impending NAND shortage. The results of the low supply have finally officially manifested themselves in the market. According to Samsung, the NAND shortage have directly caused delays in bringing their new 850 Pro 4 TB model to market.
The NAND shortage has largely been caused by the continuously growing and insatiable demand for flash storage. Simply put, the NAND producers were all caught off guard and due to the complexities of silicon fabbing, new production lines won’t be spun up till the end of this year and start alleviating the pressure.
“As a result of the worldwide NAND shortage, Samsung is focused on allocating NAND to products where we see the greatest demand. We will let you know when further updates on the 850 PRO 4TB are available.”
For Samsung, this is quite an interesting problem as they produce all their own NAND. The lack of NAND for the 850 Pro 4 TB simply means the company is already having trouble servicing their current product lineups and has no extra to spare for a new product. The 850 EVO 4 TB also faced a similar issue with a delayed launch though it eventually arrived on market.
Due to the NAND shortage, some DRAM production facilities are being retooled for NAND production as well. This may lead to a DRAM shortage further down the line as some analysts are warning. If that is the case, we may have to wait till near the end of the decade when more dedicated NAND production comes online before we see the end of shortages.
