Samsung Developing Own GPU Hardware
Peter Donnell / 10 years ago
Samsung have been putting a lot of effort into creating their own GPU hardware over the last couple of years, they’ve poached a few ex Nvidia, AMD and Intel employees to gain some expert knowledge, and they’ve no doubt thrown a lot of money at R&D to create the hardware and early reports suggest that they’re making good progress.
Samsung are still reliant on other manufacturers for the GPUs used in their smart devices and with PowerVR, Qualcomm, ARM and Nvidia all creating SoC hardware, Samsung have got some tough competition to contend with.
Having full control of their own hardware will be a big shift for Samsung and could make them even more competitive against Apple in the not too distant future. Samsung’s new hardware isn’t ready just yet, as the company is staying away from a full announcement until they’ve created something worthwhile, but if history has taught us anything about GPU development, the first Samsung chip will be nothing remarkable. It’s a fiercely competitive market and Samsung will need a lot of practice to keep up with the competition.
Samsung have their own CPU, the Exynos, so the next logical step for them would be to develop a competitive GPU and no doubt some form of APU/SoC in the not too distant future.
