Back in early April we brought you news of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and 5.8 being launched, with full and detailed specifications for both models. Based on what Samsung had told the media we were under the impression that the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and 5.8 would both launch in May in Europe and Russia.
However, May is now here and there is no sign of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 models at any European or Russian retailers. The reason for this is that Samsung have postponed the official market availability of the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and 5.8 to July for undisclosed reasons. In the UK the mobile retailer “Carphone Warehouse” will start selling the Galaxy Mega 6.3 in July and apparently the 5.8 variant will not be available at all through them, or in the UK at all.
In the Netherlands the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 will be available at the start of July while the Mega 5.8 is available from the end of July.
For those who need a recap of the main specifications and features, here is a snippet from our original article which we have linked above.
The new Galaxy Mega phones from Samsung come in two sizes, either a 6.3 inch or a 5.8 inch display model. Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Note series there is no Wacom-based “S Pen” stylus included with the Galaxy Mega. Though the devices do still have most of Samsung’s new mobile software features due to running the latest TouchWiz UI. The Samsung Galaxy Mega features Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Google’s Mobile OS.
There are a few hardware differences between the two Megas. Firstly, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 has LTE connectivity and a 1.7GHz dual core CPU while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a 1.4GHz dual core and HSPA+21. Secondly, The Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a “HD”, presumably 720p, display while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a qHD 960 by 540 display. Finally, The Galaxy Mega 6.3 also has a larger 3200mAh battery compared to the 2600mAh battery on the 5.8 variant. Both devices share the same 1.5GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera and 1.9MP front camera.
What are your thoughts on this delay? What do you think the reasons are? Do they want to fully capitalise on Galaxy S4 sales before they release the Galaxy Mega?
