Samsung Kicks off Production of 16-Gigabit GDDR6 Memory

Samsung now manufacturing GDDR6.

Samsung has officially begun mass-producing the industry’s first 16-gigabit (Gb) Graphics Double Data Rate 6 (GDDR6) memory. Apart from gaming, this kind of memory can serve in fields such as automotive, artificial intelligence systems, and networks. Jinman Han, senior vice president, Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering at Samsung Electronics, had a few words to say about the company’s production plans:

“Beginning with this early production of the industry’s first 16 Gb GDDR6, we will offer a comprehensive graphics DRAM line-up, with the highest performance and densities, in a very timely manner. By introducing next-generation GDDR6 products, we will strengthen our presence in the gaming and graphics card markets and accommodate the growing need for advanced graphics memory in automotive and network systems.”

GDDR6 vs GDDR5.

When compared to its predecessor, GDDR6 offers significant improvements. For once, the new memory relies on 10-nanometer (nm) class process technology. Moreover, it boasts 16 GB density, which is double that of GDDR5’s 8GB. We should also mention the 18-gigabits-per-second (Gbps) pin speed and data transfers of 72 gigabytes per second (Gbps). Thanks to its low-power circuit design, GDDR6 operates at 1.35V. This lowers energy consumption by about 35% when compared to GDDR5 at 1.55V.

Clearly, the new technology will help drive virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence forward. As far as gaming is concerned, we’re very excited to see how GDDR6 graphics cards will perform.
